Jackets Sweep ITA South Region Singles & Doubles Titles

Oct. 23, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team continued its stellar play on the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Courts Tuesday afternoon when they swept the 2007 ITA South Region singles and doubles titles on the very courts where they captured the 2007 NCAA Championship last May.

The Yellow Jackets knew they’d at least earn the singles title as of Tuesday morning when they advanced both Kristi Miller, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, and Amanda McDowell, the No. 3 seed, to the championship match.

Miller entered the day having won 17-consecutive singles matches in the ITA South Region Championships, including each of the last two title matches, but had her streak snapped Tuesday by the sophomore McDowell, 6-1, 6-3.

Miller, a senior that was playing in her last ITA South Region Championships, finishes with a 19-2 record in the event, with her only other loss coming to current Georgia Tech volunteer assistant coach Robin Stephenson, a former All-American at the University of Alabama.

Following the loss, Miller regrouped to team with fellow senior Whitney McCray to earn the tournament’s doubles title. The top-seeded Yellow Jacket tandem first made quick work of Florida’s third-seeded duo of Diana Srebrovic and Whitney Benik, 8-2, before earning the title with an 8-5 win against Miami’s Romy Farah and Caren Seenauth.

The doubles winner (Miller & McCray) and singles finalists (both McDowell and Miller) now advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will be played at the Racquet Club of Columbus (Ohio) Nov. 1-4.
