Jackets Host Maryland, Boston College on Dig for the Cure Weekend

Oct. 17, 2007

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech looks to regroup following a 3-0 midweek loss to Clemson when it hosts Maryland and Boston College this weekend. The Yellow Jackets (11-8, 5-4 ACC) face the Terrapins (13-6, 5-5 ACC) Friday at 7 p.m. in the annual Dig for the Cure match to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation before squaring off against the Eagles (10-10, 4-6 ACC) Saturday at 7 p.m. Tech still stands fourth in the ACC behind Clemson (9-0), Duke (9-1) and Virginia (7-3).

Match Coverage: TV broadcast of Friday’s match found on SportSouth on tape-delay basis (see details on page three of notes). Live radio broadcast (WREK-Radio: 91.1 FM/www.wrek.org) and live stats (RamblinWreck.com) available for both matches.

Tech vs. The Opponents (MD leads GT, 24-20, GT leads BC, 4-2)

Georgia Tech is 20-24 all-time against Maryland, but has a 7-4 record versus the Terrapins since Bond Shymansky was promoted to head coach in 2002. The two teams split the series in 2006, as Maryland outlasted the Jackets, 3-2, in College Park last season before Tech returned the favor with a 3-2 win in Atlanta in mid-November. Tech has won four of the last six matches between the two schools, and nine-straight over the Terrapins at O’Keefe Gym. Overall, Tech is 13-7 vs. Maryland in Atlanta. Maryland’s last win against the Jackets in Atlanta came in 1997.

Georgia Tech holds the 4-2 edge in the series against Boston College, and is an even 2-2 vs. the Eagles under Shymansky. All four of the Yellow Jackets’ wins have come in Atlanta, while Tech is 0-2 in Chestnut Hill. The two teams split the series a year ago, with Boston College getting the best of Tech, 3-1, in early October while Tech posted a 3-1 win over the Eagles in mid-November.

Jackets to Dig for the Cure This Weekend

After notching 80 digs and raising more than $6,000 in the first season the Yellow Jackets participated in Dig for the Cure, Georgia Tech will again take part in the fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, this year against Maryland on Friday, October 19. Fans, coworkers and businesses can donate either per dig the Yellow Jackets (as a team) record against Maryland, or they may donate a flat amount.

Also joining in on the fundraiser are Russell Athletic and Mizuno – both of which have donated items for the weekend. Pink Georgia Tech Athletics shirts (donated by Russell) will be available for $15 apiece, while $5 raffle tickets are available for a golf bag and two golf umbrellas, donated by Mizuno. The raffle will take place following Tech’s match against Boston College Saturday, Oct. 20.

Boston College Match Time Set for 7 p.m. – Alumni Honored

Due to conflicts with the Georgia Tech football schedule, three match times were set for TBA prior to the season, so as to not interfere with games at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

This week, the Yellow Jackets set their match time against Boston College for 7 p.m. due to the fact that Tech’s homecoming football game against Army will begin at 12 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets will also welcome back all former Georgia Tech volleyball alums on this night, honoring the returnees during halftime of the match.

Jackets Hard to Stop at O’Keefe

Georgia Tech has posted a stellar 143-42 (.773) record at O’Keefe Gym since the volleyball team began playing matches there in 1995. Tech has won at least 10 matches at O’Keefe in each of the last six seasons, and has won 71 of its 87 home matches (.816) under head coach Bond Shymansky.

Up Next

Tech concludes its homestand next weekend by hosting NC State (Friday, 7 p.m.) and North Carolina (Saturday, 7 p.m.) Both matches available on ACC Select (gatech.playonsports.tv), WREK-Radio and RamblinWreck.com.
