Gomez Opens Play at ITA Indoor Nationals

Nov. 5, 2009

ATLANTA – Testing himself against some of the best players in college tennis, Georgia Tech All-American Guillermo Gomez opens play in the ITA National Indoor Championships this afternoon in New Haven, Conn.

Gomez, a junior from Alicante, Spain, ranked 5th in the nation, will face No. 54 Tim Puetz of Auburn at 4:30 p.m. The winner will take on the winner of Austin Krajicek of Texas A&M and Robert Farah of Southern California Friday at 12 noon.

“This tournament is a good opportunity for Guillermo to solidify himself among the best in college tennis,” said Tech head coach Kenny Thorne. “It is one of the two remaining national individual titles available this season. The other is the NCAAs in May.”

Gomez, hampered somewhat by an abdominal injury this fall, nevertheless has been successful, sharing the championship of the Southern Intercollegiate in September while compiling a 9-1 singles record. His only loss came in the first round of the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships.
