Gomez Falls in SIC Tennis Semifinal

Sept. 21, 2008

ATLANTA –

Guillermo Gomez downed Jamie Hunt of Georgia in a quarterfinal single match, but fell victim to the nation’s 19th-ranked player from Kentucky in both the singles semifinals and the doubles quarterfinals Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga.

The Jackets finished the weekend getting at least one win from each of their eight players in singles, while the doubles team of Eliot Potvin and Austin Roebuck went 3-1 and reached the quarterfinals.

“Overall, thought it was a good tournament for us,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “A good start. I’m looking forward to our tournament (the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational Oct. 3-5).”

Gomez, the nation’s 33rd-ranked player, defeated Hunt in straight sets (6-3, 6-2), avenging Tech teammate Eliot Potvin’s first-round loss to Hunt. It extended his streak of victorious sets to eight before he ran into the Wildcats’ Bruno Agostinelli, who captured a 6-2, 6-4 win in the semis.

“Guillermo played a solid match against Hunt, whom he beat in our tournament last October,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “He played very solidly against the Kentucky player. He got down two breaks early in the second, and he nearly had the thing turned around with a break point down 5-4, but missed a passing shot by just about an inch. Agostinelli ended up holding and won 6-4.”

Earlier, Gomez and Kevin King faced Agostinelli and Brad Cox in a quarterfinals doubles match and fell, 8-3.

Meanwhile, Potvin finished the tournament on a high note by winning both his consolation matches, although he was unable to finish either. After advancing Saturday when his opponent was injured, the same thing happened Sunday when Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re retired with an injury after Potvin had captured the first set, 6-2.

“Eliot got up a set on a good player, who ended up retiring,” said Thorne. “He played very solidly for that set and did a lot of things we’ve been working on.”

Potvin teamed with Austin Roebuck in doubles to win their quarterfinal match Sunday over David Hopkins and Andrew Brasseaux of Wake Forest, but fell in the semifinals to Mississippi State’s Chris Doerr and Tanner Stump.
