Golfers Remain Eighth in Las Vegas

March 8, 2008

Cameron Tringale shot a 3-under-par 69 Saturday to move into second place individually, but Georgia Tech was unable to gain ground on the lead and remained in eighth place after 36 holes of the Southern Highlands Intercollegiate golf tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

Tringale, a two-time All-American, played a no-bogey round with birdies at the fifth, 13th and 18th holes to complete 36 holes at 4-under 140. Tied with four other players, he finds himself four shots off the pace of Georgia’s Hudson Swafford, who fired a 6-under 66 Saturday and stands at 8-under 136 for the tournament.

Tech sophomore Chesson Hadley posted a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 13th place. He posted a pair of birdies and an eagle early in his round, but could not sustain the momentum on the back nine, where he gave back two shots with bogeys.

The Yellow Jackets counted a 77 from junior David Dragoo (tied for 65th) and a 78 from junior Taylor Hall (tied for 40th) in their 7-over-par round of 295. John Tyler Griffin played his second straight round of 80.

On the strength of Swafford’s 66 and a 70 from Adam Mitchell, Georgia shot 3-under 285 and moved into the 36-hole team lead at 2-under 574. Host UNLV is two shots behind at even par, and Charlotte holds third place a 2-over.

Southern California is fourth at 4-over, UCLA and Texas A&M are tied for fifth at 8-over, and Arizona State is in seventh at 13-over.
