New London, N.C. –

Chesson Hadley fired a 6-under-par 66 to lead three Yellow Jackets with sub-70 rounds Saturday, and 17th-ranked Georgia Tech expanded its lead to seven strokes after 36 holes at the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.

The Yellow Jackets, in search of their second straight ACC title and fourth in five years, fired a 12-under-par 276 Saturday, their 11th consecutive subpar round in the championship at the 7,100-yard, par 72 Old North State Club. Tech also got a 4-under-par 68 from Kyle Scott and a 3-under 69 from Paul Haley. James White, who had a hole-in-one at the par-3 14th, shot a 73 for Tech’s fourth counting score.

Tech again made hay at the par-5 18th hole, getting birdies from each of its counting players, and also played the par-5 first in 3-under-par. The Jackets have a 36-hole score of 555, 21 shots under par and seven ahead of 22nd-ranked Duke (14-under 562). No. 32 Wake Forest (13-under 563) is in third, followed by No. 21 Virginia (10-under 566) and 15th-ranked Clemson (7-under 569).

“The first and the last holes are big in terms of how you start and how you finish on this golf course, and they’re holes you need to go after,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “We did a nice job of playing those holes today.

“Chesson has played awfully well here during his career and gave us another great round today, and those were big rounds for Kyle and Paul as well. If they come through like that again tomorrow, we’ve got a good chance to win. It’s nice to have seven shots in hand, but we’ve got to play well again tomorrow.”

Hadley, who has never failed to shoot par or better in 11 career rounds in the ACC Championship, posted his seventh straight under-par round in the championship Saturday, and gained a share of the lead at 9-under-par 135 with Matt Hill of NC State (69 Saturday). They are one shot ahead of Duke’s Adam Long (71 Saturday, 8-under 136 total).

The Tech senior from Raleigh, N.C., who has one tournament victory in his career, is aiming to become the Yellow Jackets’ seventh ACC individual champion after finishing one shot out of the lead in last year’s ACC Championship. His 66 Saturday began with an eagle at the par-5 first and included six birdies and two bogeys.

Scott, who missed Tech’s last tournament with back spasms, is tied for sixth place at 5-under-par 139, while Haley is in 11th place individually at 4-under 140. Scott, a junior from Johannesburg, South Africa, bogeyed the second hole Saturday, when put together five birdies and no bogeys the rest of the way. Haley, a junior from Dallas, Texas, also played a solid round with four birdies and only one bogey. John-Tyler Griffin, whose 74 did not count for Tech Saturday, is tied for 18th place at 2-under 142.

The 54-hole event concludes Sunday, with the first groups teeing off at 8:30 a.m. Tech begins play at 11:10 a.m. Live scoring will be available on www.golfstat.com. Live webstreaming will be available for free Sunday from 2 p.m. to conclusion of play on theACC.com. Please visit the ACC website: www.theACC.com for complete details.

Old North State Club is hosting the championship for the 14th time overall and for the ninth consecutive year. Five of Tech’s ACC titles have occurred at Old North State, and the Yellow Jackets 11 titles in history ranked second among conference schools behind Wake Forest (18). Tech has won six of its conference titles under Heppler.
