@GeorgiaTechFB's Freeman Up for a Pair of Community Service Awards

July 13, 2016

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech football’s KeShun Freeman was honored for his ongoing service to the community on Wednesday when he was officially tabbed as a nominee for the 2016 Wuerffel Trophy and the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the NCAA Division I FBS student-athlete that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Freeman is one of 88 nominees for the award. The nominees will be pared down to semifinalists on Nov. 3 and finalists on Nov. 23. The 2016 Wuerffel Trophy recipient will be unveiled on Dec. 6 at the National Football Foundation press conference in New York City.

For 25 years, the AFCA Good Works team has recognized student-athletes that demonstrate the award’s mission that “good works” extend beyond the football field. The 165 nominees balance academics with athletics while donating their limited free time and energy to helping others. The 25-member 2016 AFCA Good Works Team (with 12 FBS student-athletes, 12 representatives from NCAA Division I FCS, Division II, Division III and the NAIA and an honorary head coach) will be announced in September.

Freeman, a junior defensive end, is involved in several community service projects in Atlanta and beyond. His efforts include serving as an active volunteer for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he takes part in the For the Kids Dance Marathon and creates and delivers Valentines for hospitalized children.

His other service initiatives have included traveling with teammates to the Dominican Republic on behalf of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to build houses for local families, serving as a volunteer counselor at Atlanta’s Chick-Fil-A Youth Football Camp, acting as a Girls on the Run race volunteer and organizing fellow student-athletes to participate in the opening ceremony of the Georgia Special Olympics Winter Games.

On the field, Freeman recorded 44 total tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks as a sophomore last season. He was a consensus freshman all-American in 2014 after leading Georgia Tech with 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

Freeman and the Yellow Jackets open the 2016 campaign on Sept. 3 when they face ACC foe Boston College in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Kickoff is set for 7:30 a.m. ET and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Season tickets for Georgia Tech’s seven-game home slate in 2016 are on sale now, starting at just $35 per game with benefits including exclusive events, Buzz Memories credits that can be redeemed for behind-the-scenes access and much more.
