Georgia Tech's Sydney Wallace Named To ACC All-Freshman Team

Feb. 28, 2012

Atlanta – Georgia Tech’s Sydney Wallace was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team today as announced by conference commissioner John Swofford. The award is selected by the league’s head coaches and the Blue Ribbon Panel, which consists of national and local media, as well as school representatives.

Wallace is the eighth Yellow Jacket to earn All-Freshman accolades from the ACC and the fourth under head coach MaChelle Joseph.

“I am very excited Sydney Wallace has been named to the five-member ACC All-Freshman Team,” Joseph said. “Her ability to put points on the board quickly and with range is very impressive. She has a very bright future in this league.”

The Johns Creek, Ga., native averaged 5.6 points per game and made 23 3-pointers, the second most for the Yellow Jackets. Wallace played in 28 games, started at Marquette, and converted on 39 percent of her field goal attempts for the year.

Joseph said before the season that Wallace was the quickest player she had coached and the freshman proved her correct on more than one occasion. In a three-point loss at fifth-ranked Maryland, Wallace scored all seven of her points in a 38-second span and added a steal.

A month later when the eighth-ranked Terps visited Tech, Wallace scored five points in 10 seconds when she made a 3-pointer, got a steal and finished it with a fastbreak layup. In the Yellow Jackets’ next outing, Wallace scored six points in 38 seconds on a pair of 3-pointers.

As the fourth seed in this week’s ACC Tournament, Georgia Tech receives a first-round bye and will face the winner of fifth-seed North Carolina and 12th-seed Clemson in an 11 a.m. matchup Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. The ACC regional sports network will carry the contest live, as well as WREK 91.1 FM.
