Georgia Tech Track & Field Returns to Action at Orange & Purple Classic

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech track & field teams will return to action Saturday after a week layoff at the Orange & Purple Classic on Rock Norman Complex track in Clemson, S.C.

Saturday’s schedule of events begins with the women’s javelin throw and the men’s hammer throw at 10 a.m. The day’s running events will commence at noon with the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase followed by the women’s race. The women’s 4×400-meter relay is final event scheduled and will begin at 4:55 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets have two meets remaining including Saturday before the NCAA Region Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. Ten members of the women’s team and seven men have already qualified for the regional.

Senior James Lemons II leads the men’s squad with the fifth-best mark in the nation in the triple jump. He registered a personal-best mark of 53 feet, 6 ¾ inches at the ACC Championships. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan ranks 10th in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 52 feet, 8 inches.

The women’s team is led by senior Shantia Moss, who has registered the sixth-best time in the country (13.09) in the 100-meter hurdles. Junior Kimery Hern, a 2007 All-American in the hammer throw, currently has the 24th-best mark in the nation with a school-record throw of 197 feet, 11 inches.

The Jackets will return home next weekend to host their final meet of the outdoor season. The Georgia Tech Invitational will run from Friday-Saturday, May 16-17 at the George C Griffin Track on the Tech campus.
