Georgia Tech Track and Field Teams Open Indoor Season in Clemson

Nov. 29, 2006

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech track and field teams are set to kick-off their indoor season at the Clemson Opener this Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2, in Clemson, S.C. The meet will begin with the men’s Distance Medley Relay at 5 p.m. on Friday.

“We are looking forward to the Clemson Opener and getting started with the `07 indoor season,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale.

Junior Jerome Miller, who earned all-conference honors in both the high jump and the triple jump during the ’06 indoor campaign, leads the men’s team. Sophomore Juan Cave also returns to the team. Cave earned all-conference honors after finishing second in the high jump at last season’s Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships with a jump of 7 feet, one inch.

“Coming off interrupted training during Thanksgiving week, our objective is to give a limited number of our team members a chance to get back on an indoor track facility and evaluate their level of fitness,” added Hinsdale.

On the women’s side, junior Shantia Moss returns for the Jackets after earning All-America and all-conference honors in the 60-meter high hurdles during the indoor season and in the 100-meter high hurdles during the outdoor season. Senior Ashlee Kidd is returning to the team after earning her second consecutive All-America honor in the 400-meter during the outdoor season. Kidd is the reigning ACC Indoor Champion and record-holder in the 200-meter and 400.

“We’ve had a solid fall of training and the women are excited about the opportunity to compete,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “The Clemson Opener has been the start of our indoor season for a number of years. It’s not a large meet but there will be some good competition and we will get a chance to see where some of our kids are before the end of the academic semester and the holiday break.”

Senior Fatmata Fofanah, an all-conference honoree, finished second in the 60 hurdles at the 2006 ACC Indoor Championships and second in the 100 hurdles at the 2006 ACC Outdoor Championships.
