Georgia Tech Track and Field Opens Indoor Season with Strong Performance at Wildcat Speed Meet

Dec. 7, 2001

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field teams successfully opened their indoor seasons Friday at the Wildcat Speed Meet at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Field House.

On the women’s side, the Jackets posted wins in seven of the fourteen events. Senior Angela Levens had the most convincing win of the day, capturing the weight throw with a career-best and school record mark of 60’11.50″, more than five feet ahead of her nearest competitor. Her toss was good enough to meet the provisional mark for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Junior Jamie Ostrov, who won the high jump (5’9.75″), also met an NCAA provisional standard, while junior Cassandra Worthy established a school record in the shot put (45’3.50″), placing second.

Sophomore sprinter Amandi Rhett captured wins in both the 60-meter dash (7.67) and the 200 meters (25.28), while freshman Shanta Smith captured the 400 meters (56.63) in her collegiate debut. Senior Mishanta Reyes claimed the win in the 60-meter hurdles (8.65), as Tech went first, second and third in that event.

Tech’s other win came from the 4×400 meter relay (3:54.83).

For the Yellow Jacket men, junior Spencer Irvine posted the lone win of the day, besting a pair of teammates to claim the triple jump (45’10.00″). Tech placed second and third in the 800, with David Schmidt and Barton Crist logging solid runs. Junior captain Bryan Swarn finished third in the 400 with a time of 48.20, and the Jackets’ 4×400 relay placed second (3:16.83).

Tech’s freshman throwers also had solid debuts. Zeb Sion (53’10.50″) and Jonathan Spillman (50’6.25) finished second and third, respectfully, in the shot put, while Ian Brewer was third in the weight throw. Sion’s mark makes him third-best indoor shot putter in Tech history in just his first collegiate competition.

Classmate Donald Beamer also had an impressive day, finishing fourth in the 60 meters (7.06) and fifth in the 200 (22.13).

The Jackets return to action on January 12 at the Kentucky Invitational.
