Georgia Tech Resumes Season in Kentucky

Jan. 10, 2007

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will return to action after a long lay-off this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13 and 14, at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. The teams will continue their indoor season in the Nutter Field House on the University of Kentucky campus.

“We are really looking forward to our trip to the University of Kentucky,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “They have a wonderful facility and this track has always offered the opportunity for great performances.”

“The Kentucky Invitational is a great meet to begin the New Year with,” added women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “The facility is excellent and the competition will be challenging.”

The men’s team is led by junior Jerome Miller, who will try to once again break his own school- and personal-best mark of 7 feet, 2 ½ inches in the high jump, which he set at the Clemson Opener in Dec. Sophomore Juan Cave will be right on his heels, as his personal-best in the high jump is 7 feet, 1 inch. Freshman Alphonso Jordan had a nice debut, placing second in the triple jump landing at 49 feet, 9 ¾ inches in Clemson.

“The competition will be strong and our team is excited to be a part of this Invitational,” said Hinsdale.

On the women’s side, senior Ashlee Kidd came out strong in Clemson, winning both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with NCAA provisional times. Junior Shantia Moss also won her race, the 60-meter hurdles, in a NCAA provisional time. Freshman Tiffany Grant made an instant impression with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash at Clemson.

“We’ve got a mix of talented and proven veterans who will begin sharpening up for more important meets later and promising younger athletes who will begin turning potential into performance,” said Drosky. “The women have been preparing well and we’re looking forward to spirited competition.”
