Georgia Tech Falls to Top-Ranked Georgia, 7-0

Feb. 13, 2007

Atlanta – Georgia Tech (2-2), ranked No. 37 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, fell, 7-0, to in-state rival No. 1 Georgia (4-0) Tuesday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Jackets were playing with out their No. 1 player David North who is nursing a sore back.

The top-ranked Bulldogs, a team that includes two players in the nation’s top 15 and two others in the top 65, dominated the Jackets from the beginning, sweeping in doubles to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

The Jackets didn’t fair much better in singles Tuesday, as Jose Muguruza, replacing North in the No. 1 spot, was defeated by No. 13 Luis Flores, 6-3, 6-1.

Every other Jacket fell in straight sets but freshman Luke Rassow-Kantor did battle from three games back to force a tiebreak with Nate Schnugg. Rassow-Kantor would ultimately fall, 8-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Georgia Tech has dropped the last 21 meetings with the Bulldogs and hasn’t defeated their rival since 1988. Prior to Tech’s 1988 win, the Jackets lost 25 straight to Georgia.

The loss is Georgia Tech’s second straight as they fall to 2-2 for the season. Tech returns to action Saturday when they travel to Auburn (4-0) to face their second Southeastern Conference opponent in a week.

Tech’s next home match is Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Admission to all Georgia Tech home matches is free.
