Georgia Tech Announces Beginning of Women's Swimming & Diving Program

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech has named Sharon Krueger its new assistant head coach for women’s swimming, and she will undertake the process of beginning the women’s swimming and diving program at the Institute, Georgia Tech director of athletics Dave Braine announced Thursday.

The women’s program will join the current Yellow Jacket men’s swimming and diving program as a combined program, and the women’s team will begin competition in the fall of 2001. Tech had been the only Atlantic Coast Conference team to sponsor swimming without a combined program, and will now join seven other league members in both men and women’s swimming and diving competition.

“Adding a women’s swimming and diving program continues our pursuit of meeting the needs and interests of our female student body,” said Braine, who now oversees a program of 17 varsity sports, nine for men and eight for women. “We already have one of the finest aquatics facilities in the country, which is to be enclosed in the near future. There is no reason why we can’t develop one of the finest swimming programs in the country.”

“We’re extremely pleased to have Sharon as part of our staff,” said Georgia Tech head coach Seth Baron. “I am excited about the opportunity to work with her, she has already shown a great deal of enthusiasm about Georgia Tech and its swimming and diving program.”

Krueger comes to Georgia Tech from Syracuse University, where she spent the last 12 seasons as an assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach, handling all aspects of recruiting for both the Orangemen men and women’s swim teams as well as coaching daily swimming and dryland workouts. Prior to her time at Syracuse, she was the assistant women’s swimming coach at Michigan State for two seasons, handling a number of duties, including the development and implementation of dryland and weight programs for the Spartans.

“I am tremendously excited about the opportunity to begin the new women’s program at Georgia Tech,” said Krueger. “This is a great academic and athletic institution and the ability to compete in a great conference such as the ACC is just another tremendous aspect.”

“Sharon’s 15 years of coaching experience at the Division I level will be a great asset to our program,” added Baron. “Not only in the recruiting phase, but also with her on deck coaching experience.”

Krueger will handle the recruiting phase and startup of the women’s program for the Yellow Jackets, which will be a fully funded endeavor by the 2004-05 academic year, with scholarships being phased in over the next four years, Braine said. While her primary responsibilities will be with the women’s team, Krueger, along with the other members of the Georgia Tech coaching staff will assist Baron in working with both the men’s and women’s teams.

“There are some female swimmers that are already in school that will red-shirt and practice with the men’s team this year,” said Braine. “If we could recruit the top swimmers that are in Atlanta every year, we could have a national caliber team. Swimming is a sport that attracts dedicated young people who are good students.”
