@GaTechSoftball: Jackets fall to North Carolina, 7-0

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team fell to conference foe North Carolina by a score of 7-0 in the first game of a three-game series on Saturday evening.

The Jackets fell to 22-31 on the season and 7-14 in ACC play, while the Tar Heels improved to 28-22 overall and 11-11 in league action.

North Carolina outplayed us today”, said head coach Shelly Hoerner. “They played a great game. We’ve got to come out tomorrow and execute better all the way around – offensively and in the circle. I though defensively we played well. We made some great defensive plays. But all around, we’ve got to come out and play a much better game tomorrow.”

The Tar Heels got on the board first with a two-run homer from Taylor Wike in the top of the first.It was Wike’s eighth deep shot of the season.

The Jackets were in good position to score in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double from Kelsey Chisholm, but she was tagged out at home after a Maddie Lionberger single to end the inning.

UNC’s Jill Ferraro knocked in a pair of runs on a bases-loaded double to give the Heels a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth. UNC added another run on an RBI single from Aquilla Mateen to make it 5-0.

North Carolina made it 6-0 with a solo shot to center from Kristen Brown, her 17th of the season. They then made it 7-0 with another solo shot from Kendra Lynch.

Jenna Goodrich fell to 11-17 with the loss for the Jackets, pitching all seven innings with three strikeouts and seven earned runs. North Carolina’s Kendra Lynch (24-16) earned the win while allowing three hits and striking out three.

The Jackets had three hits on the evening, including a double from Chisholm and singles from Lionberger and Jessica Kowalewicz.

Up Next

The Jackets take on North Carolina on Sunday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on ESPN3. The Jackets will recognize its three seniors for Senior Day prior to the first game.
