TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia Tech softball team (11-21) fell at No. 5 Alabama (23-7), 11-0, in six innings Wednesday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium.

“I thought we competed well today,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “We made good adjustments at the plate even though our results didn’t show it. Alabama is a top team in the country and to go well into the fifth inning with having given up only three hits is huge for our mentality going into the weekend against NC State.”

Alabama got on the board first in the opening inning thanks to a two-run home run by Danae Hays. After the first inning, Georgia Tech starter Kylie Kleinschmidt limited Alabama to two hits and no runs through the next three innings.

In the bottom of the fifth and with one out, Alabama laced together three singles to load the bases. The Crimson Tide scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Haylie McCleney and four runs on a grand slam hit by Marisa Runyon to take a 7-0 lead. Christina Biggerstaff entered to pitch and retired the next bat for the third out.

The Crimson Tide loaded the bases again with no outs in the sixth inning and pinch hitter Chaunsey Bell hit a grand slam for Alabama to win it, 11-0.

Kleinschmidt (3-14) suffered the loss and pitched 4.2 innings with seven runs on seven hits and two strikeouts. Biggerstaff pitched 0.2 innings with four runs on three hits.

Sydney Littlejohn (9-1) earned the win, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing one hit. Leslie Jury pitched a hitless, scoreless inning of relief in the sixth.

Georgia Tech is back in action with a three-game home series against NC State before hitting the road for 12-straight games. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and it will be Tech’s StrikeOut Cancer Game as the Yellow Jackets will wear pink jerseys to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Join us and wear your pink for this special day. The Yellow Jackets will auction off their game-worn pink jerseys March 28-April 11 on RamblinWreck.com, with all proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Sunday’s single game is slated to begin at 12 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will welcome more than 20 alumni back to the Flats and recognize them prior to first pitch.
