CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Guillermo Gomez won in straight sets to advance to the second round of the singles draw to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team on day one of the ITA Wilson Mideast Region Championships at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
Gomez won his first round match over Danny Dossetor of the Citadel, 6-2, 6-1. The Alicante, Spain native has now won six-straight matches including five in order to win the Georgia Tech Fall Tournament earlier this month.
“Guillermo (Gomez) played a very good match today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He showed a complete package on the court, finishing his match very soundly.”
Senior Jose Muguruza, playing the only other singles match for Tech on Thursday, fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Clay Donato of the University of North Carolina.
In doubles play, Tech’s Muguruza brothers, Jose and Miguel, and the team of Gomez and David North each earned victories on the day. The Muguruza tandem defeated 10th-ranked Damon Gooch and Mason Schermerhorn of Elon, 9-7, in a closely fought match. Gomez and North won their match easily over David Guy and Grega Terez of Charleston Southern by the score of 8-2.
“Guillermo and David played very well today,” Thorne said. “The duo of Jose and Miguel worked really well together. We can see the two of them gel and show some real promise. They did what they needed to in order to win.”
The duo of Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith dropped their opening round doubles match, 9-8, to the No. 14 seed Enrique Olivares and Sebastian Serrano of ETSU in a very close match that featured a tiebreaker.
The tournament continues tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m., when North and Blackmon will play their first singles matches of the championships.
Results from the ITA Wilson Mideast Region Championships will be posted at the end of each day on www.ramblinwreck.com, Georgia Tech’s official athletic website.
