Flores Captures Title at Debbie Southern Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Victoria Flores captured a singles title on the final day of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic on Sunday as three Yellow Jackets pocketed singles wins in the final round of play. The 32nd annual tournament took place at Furman University.

Flores captured the singles flight 6 title Sunday morning, battling back to capture a three-set win over Furman’s Julia Adams. Flores dropped the first set 6-4, but rebounded in the second, 7-5, to force a deciding third set. The Yellow Jacket, who won three singles matches in the tournament, pocketed the third set, 6-4, to collect the win.

Newcomer Dalila Said also competed for a singles title on Sunday, making her first Yellow Jacket appearance this weekend. The freshman battled MSU’s Sara Lizariturry in three sets, but could not pull out the win, falling 4-6, 6-0, 4-6.

In consolation matches, both Kenya Jones and Valeriya Deminova pocketed wins. Jones took home a three-set win over Amanda Meyer of Vanderbilt, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Deminova ousted Alex Angyalosy of Clemson, 6-2, 6-2.

“I am really happy that we were able to compete at the tournament this weekend,” commented head coach Rodney Harmon. “There were so many good players from the top schools in attendance. I know that each of our players learned a lot from each of their matches. Congrats to Victoria as she went undefeated this weekend in both singles and doubles.”

Qualifiers will head out to Pacific Palisades, Calif., this weekend for the Rivieria/ITA All-American Championships. As a team, Tech will return to action at the ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by the Yellow Jackets, Oct. 18-21.
