NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Georgia Tech sophomore Irina Falconi’s attempt to become the first women’s collegiate tennis player to win the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship and the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship singles title in the same year since 1985 came up short Sunday when she fell to Cal’s Jana Juricova.

Falconi, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (6) decision to Juricova in the finals of the 2009 National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

“It is tough to lose in the finals of a tournament but there is still another season ahead,” Falconi said. “The best is still to come. It will be good to take the fall and continue it into the spring.”

Falconi closed out her fall season with an 11-1 record and has made a claim for the No. 1 ranking when the first ITA poll of the spring season comes out in January.

The Yellow Jackets also closed out their weekend at the Kitty Harrison Invitational against members of Florida and Princeton Sunday. She finished the tournament by winning both of her singles matches.

Freshman Elizabeth Kilborn continued her strong performance this weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Princeton’s Hillary Bartlett.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Jan. 15, 2010 when they split up to compete at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
