THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team rolled to a 102-44 win against Flagler in its exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.

“I think any time you are trying to incorporate six freshmen into a lineup I think it’s one of those things that you never know what to expect,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “I was really pleased today with the progress we have made in one week. I’m proud of the fact that we scored over 100 points in our first exhibition game. It says a lot about the potential of this team. Obviously, we have a lot of work to do but I’m excited because we are a work in progress. We are going to get better and better as the year goes on.”

Six Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures, including two freshmen. Georgia Tech was led sophomore Kaela Davis who scored 27 points, including four 3-pointers. Freshman Zaire O’Neil recorded a double-double in her first outing as a Jacket, leading the team in rebounds with 10 and contributing 14 points.

Freshman Antonia Peresson scored 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and dished out three assists. Junior Aaliyah Whiteside recorded 11 points and led the team in assists with five. Sophomore Katarina Vuckovic hit three 3-pointers while scoring 11 points total and senior Sydney Wallace tallied 10 points against the Saints.

“I was really proud of the way they came out and shared the basketball,” Joseph said. “To have 24 assists and have so many different people make a 3-point shot says a lot about the potential of this team.”

The Yellow Jackets made 11 3-pointers against Flagler and had 24 total assists. Georgia Tech forced 25 turnovers and scored 34 points off of Flagler’s mistakes.

With the score tied at four early in the first half, the Yellow Jackets scored six-straight points to take their first lead of the afternoon, 10-4, four minutes into the game.  A 12-2 run gave the Jackets a 25-10 advantage with just under eight minutes left in the first half, while Davis scored eight of her 17 first-half points during the run. The Yellow Jackets sank five 3-pointers on the way to a 44-28 lead at halftime.

The Saints scored the first basket out of halftime, but the Jackets put together a 13-0 run to jump to a 57-30 advantage. The Yellow Jackets held the Saints scoreless for 4:11 during the run. Georgia Tech would continue its sharp shooting from the 3-point line when both Peresson and Davis made shots from behind the arc in a span of two minutes.

The Jackets also forced nine turnovers between the 12:59 and 5:02 marks and held the Saints to 1-of-11 field goals as they took a 87-36 lead. Georgia Tech held on to the lead to win the exhibition contest, 102-44.

The Yellow Jackets open up the 2014-15 season on the road at Loyola Chicago on Friday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. ET.
