Davis and Marshall On Naismith Preseason Watch List

Nov. 25, 2013

ATLANTA – Freshman Kaela Davis and senior Tyaunna Marshall have been tabbed on the 2013-14 Naismith Trophy women’s early season watch list, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today.

Davis is just one of two freshmen listed on early season watch list. The Suwanee, Ga. native has had remarkable start to her career on the Flats, averaging a team-high 20.3 points per game and leading the Yellow Jackets in rebounding with 8.0 rebounds per game. She has led the team in scoring in every game so far this season and scored a season-high 28 points at #4/3 Tennessee.

Davis opened up the season with back-to-back double-doubles and was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for her efforts. Most recently, Davis was named one of three captains of the 2013-14 Yellow Jackets.

This is the third major award watch list Marshall has been named to after being selected to the Wooden Award’s preseason top 30 and the Wade Watch List’s preseason top 25. Marshall also garnered preseason All-ACC honors for the second-straight year.

Marshall currently has 1,548 points, putting her in eighth place on Georgia Tech’s all-time scoring list and just 408 points shy of becoming the Yellow Jackets’ all-time leading scorer. Marshall is averaging 9.3 points per game so far this season and grabbing an average of 5.7 rebounds per game.

The 50 player watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2013-14 college basketball season. The Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year presented by AT&T will be awarded during the 2014 Women’s Final Four in Nashville.

In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the top 30 players in the nation. In March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists.

Notable Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year winners include Chamique Holdsclaw, Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo, and Tina Charles. The Naismith women’s Trophy is the most prestigious national award presented annually to the women’s college basketball player of the year. For more information, visit www.naismithawards.com.

The Jackets head to Brooklyn for the Thanksgiving holiday to play in the LIU Turkey Classic. First up, Tech faces Southern Utah on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
