Aug. 31, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country will kick off the 2017 season when they head to the Jacksonville State Open in Oxford, Ala., on Friday, Sept. 1.

Coming off of No. 7 and 10 rankings for the men and women, respectively, in the USTFCCCA South Region, the Yellow Jackets will take on runners from Alabama, Florida A&M, Kennesaw State and Troy, as well as Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Chattanooga and Samford.

The women’s team is currently slated for a 4K race at 6 p.m. with the men following that with a 6:40 p.m. 5K race.

This is the first time in two years that the White and Gold have competed in the Jacksonville State Open, where the women won the event taking home the top five fastest times. The men’s team finished second in the event, with Jeremy Greenwald taking home the first place time and Georgia Tech taking home seven of the top 15 finishing times.

The 7th-ranked women’s team returns junior Amy Ruiz, junior Mary Prouty and sophomore Mary Claire Solomon. Ruiz finished as the top Jacket in the most meets last season with Prouty right behind as the top finisher twice.

The 10th-ranked men’s team returns senior Nahom Solomon, sophomore Frank Pittman and junior Mitchell Sanders. Solomon was the top Jacket in all but one meet in 2016 while Pittman was two-time ACC Player of the Week.
