Cross Country Finishes First, Sixth At Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams placed first and sixth, respectively, at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Saturday. The men claimed the top spot for the second-straight year out of 12 teams, six of which are ranked in the USTFCCCA Regional polls.

The men were led by Alec Clifford who placed ninth overall in the 8K out of 111 competitors. Clifford logged a time of 26:02, followed by Brandon Lasater’s 15th-place finish with a career-best time of 26:11.

All five point scorers for the men finished within the top 25 as Obiandu Igwe (18th; 26:17), Joseph Stowe (22nd; career-best 26:23) and Eric Powers (23rd; 26:29) rounded out Tech’s top five.

The Yellow Jacket men scored 66 points to lead the pack by a seven-point margin. Auburn placed second with 73 points, followed by Mississippi State (77 points).

On the women’s side, Katie Townsend finished the 5K first for the Yellow Jackets. Townsend, who has been the top finisher for Tech in the last three races, crossed the line in 12th place out of 135 runners with a time of 18:04.

Mary Kate DuBard followed in 24th with a time of 18:26. Katie Vance (32nd; 18:33), Kaylee Isaacs (37th; 18:36) and Rachel Hammond (42nd; 18:47) completed Tech’s top five.

As a team, the women placed sixth out of 12 teams, including nine regionally ranked squads. The Jackets totaled 138 points. Host Alabama won the women’s race with 74 points, followed by Tennessee (94) and Mississippi State (96).

The cross country team is back in action Saturday, Oct. 27 in Blacksburg, Va. for the ACC Championships.
