Castro Tied for Lead in Las Vegas Golf

March 10, 2007

ATLANTA –

On a day when only five players broke par, Roberto Castro shot a 1-under-par 71 and Cameron Tringale added a 2-under 70 Saturday, but Georgia Tech had to count a pair of scores in the 80s and fell back to a tie for sixth place after 36 holes at the Southern Highlands Collegiate golf tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

Castro, who played a solid round with three birdies and two bogeys, shot his seventh consecutive subpar round of the spring and moved into a four-way tie for the lead at 3-under 141 heading into Sunday’s final round. Tringale played the front nine four strokes under par and move into a tie for fifth place at 1-under 143.

The Yellow Jackets could make no headway on the lead, however, after counting a pair of 83 from Chesson Hadley and Taylor Hall to post a team score of 307. Tech is tied with Clemson and host UNLV at 17-over-par 593, nine shots off the pace.

Georgia shot 299 and moved into the team lead at 8-under-par 584, three shots ahead of first-round leader UCLA and seven clear of Florida, who each failed to break 300. Arizona and Texas A&M are tied for fourth place at 16-over 592.

Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., bidding for his second straight tournament title, is tied for the lead with Billy Horschel of Florida and Lucas Lee of UCLA, who each carded a 72 Saturday, and first-round leader Martin Piller of Texas A&M, who shot 74.

The final round is set for Sunday, with live scoring is available at Golfstat.com
