THE FLATS – Bryan Cook, co-offensive coordinator at Cal Poly the last four seasons and an assistant at Georgia Tech in the early 2000s, will return to Atlanta to serve as quarterbacks and B-backs coach for the Yellow Jackets.
Cook replaces Brian Bohannon, who was recently named the first head coach at Kennesaw State.
Cal Poly, which runs an offense very similar to Georgia Tech’s spread option, finished 9-3 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs. The Mustangs, who were 7-1 in their first year in the Big Sky Conference, compiled a record of 26-19 in Cook’s four seasons.
Under Cook, who also coached the Cal Poly quarterbacks and fullbacks, the Mustangs ranked third nationally last season in FCS rushing offense (324.2 yards per game), seventh in scoring offense (36.7 ppg) and first in pass efficiency (175.7).
“We are excited to have Bryan join our staff,” head coach Paul Johnson said. “He is very familiar with the offense and the position groups he will be coaching. He’s young and energetic, and I think an ideal fit for what we need.”
Prior to joining the Cal Poly staff in 2009, Cook served four years as head coach at West Point Prep in Monmouth, NJ, where he compiled a 28-22-1 record. His 2008 team finished 7-3 and the 2006 squad went 8-2. He was the defensive coordinator at West Point Prep in 2004 before being promoted to head coach.
Cook was a graduate assistant coach three seasons at Georgia Tech under two different head coaches. In 2001, when Tech went 8-5 and played in the Seattle Bowl, Cook helped coach the Yellow Jacket defensive backs and special teams under head coach George O’Leary. In 2002, Cook coached tight ends under head coach Chan Gailey and helped Tech produce a 7-6 record and a Silicon Valley Classic appearance. In 2003, Cook worked with the safeties for a team that advanced to the Humanitarian Bowl.
A 1998 graduate of Ithaca, Cook coached the Bomber wide receivers in 1999 before working as a defensive assistant at Lafayette in 2000.
Cook was a four-year Dean’s List student at Ithaca, earning a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in December, 1998, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and completing his master’s degree in exercise science in September, 2000.
At Ithaca, Cook lettered in both football and lacrosse, earning all-conference honors in lacrosse as a defenseman. Cook was a starting strong safety on the gridiron when Ithaca captured ECAC championships in 1996 and 1998.
Originally from upstate New York, Cook and wife, Julia, have two children, son, Jackson, and daughter, Reagan.
