March 22, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech track and field and men’s cross country senior Alex Grady was recognized as the 2017 Peach of an Athlete Amateur Role Model by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America on Tuesday night at the 2017 Peach of an Athlete Role Model Banquet hosted at the College Football Hall of Fame.

Grady is the 12th Georgia Tech student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor, and only the second men’s track and field student-athlete since Derek Mills in 1994, the award’s first recipient. The Peach of an Athlete Banquet is held to honor athletes and outstanding community members who uphold the high civic values of Scouting.

In 2015, Grady was voted as the first-ever recipient of the Ultimate Haier Achievement Award, which is presented to deserving student-athletes for their accomplishments beyond sports. The four-time letterwinner is the president of Georgia Tech’s Student Athletic Advisory Board. A graduate of Newton High School in Covington, Ga., where he was the valedictorian of his graduating class, Grady is majoring in mechanical engineering.

He was selected First Team of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Athlete Scholar Award and is a recipient of the Robert L. “Bobby” Dodd Endowed Scholarship Award for athletic and academic achievement. The senior has devoted more than 370 hours to community service over his collegiate career.

Grady kicked off the 2017 outdoor track and field season with a first-place finish in the 2000m steeplechase at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. He competed in five of the six meets in the 2016 cross country season, earning All-ACC Academic honors. He grabbed a second-place finish in the 3000m at the Music City Challenge during the 2016-17 indoor track and field season. He also rewrote his career bests in each event he competed in during the 2016-17 indoor season.
