THE FLATS — The #35 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (10-7, 6-4 ACC) took down #23 Northwestern (10-6, 5-2 Big Ten), 5-2, at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex this afternoon.

“We competed really well in doubles,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “When you are able to win a doubles point, that brings a lot of momentum into singles. We won a number of first sets on a number of courts. I thought the girls played well. We’ve played well through this tough gauntlet that we have had to play. I’m happy with the level of play.”

The win marked Georgia Tech’s fourth victory against a higher ranked opponent in the past six matches, which included victories against #32 Notre Dame, #17 Duke and #34 Virginia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets fought hard to win the doubles point for the 12th time in 17 matches. Northwestern won the first doubles match of the afternoon, after the #70-ranked pair of Rheeya Doshi and Brooke Rischbieth defeated freshman Alexis Prokopuik and sophomore Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer, 8-4.

The #17-ranked tandem of junior Kendal Woodard and freshman Paige Hourigan evened up doubles after dropping #39 Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner, 8-6, on court one.

Down 6-5 on court three to Northwestern’s Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung, sophomore Rasheeda McAdoo and freshman Johnnise Renaud paired up to rattle off the next three games to win, 8-6, and give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

Renaud, who is ranked #104 in singles, kept up the high intensity, recording back-to-back 6-1 set wins on court one to defeat Barnett and give the Jackets a 2-0 lead.

Northwestern would then score one of their points on court three when Sze Leung defeated Woodard, 6-3, 6-2.

Two set victories on courts six and two by the Jackets would secure Tech’s 10th win of the season. McAdoo faced Rischbieth on court six and put together a 6-2, 6-2 victory to push Georgia Tech ahead 3-1. #56 Hourigan sealed the victory for the Yellow Jackets, defeating Larner 6-4, 6-1 at the number two position.

Prokopuik gave the Yellow Jackets a 5-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court five.

On court four, Anton-Ohlmeyer edged Chatt in set one, 7-5, but Chatt came back to win the second set, 6-3. Chatt came out victorious in the tiebreaker, 10-8.

The Yellow Jackets finish out their home schedule this weekend at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex, hosting Boston College on Friday, April 10 at 4 p.m. and Virginia on Sunday, April 12 at noon.
