#3 GT 6, UGA 5 Post-Game Quotes

Georgia Tech Head Coach Danny Hall

I didn’t think we pitched all that badly, they were just a little bit fortunate, had some groundballs that found some holes. The hit and run play was going to be a double play if [Derek] Dietrich doesn’t fall down but he did fall down. They took advantage of some mistakes we made there, but guys kind of hung in and then we were fortunate there in the eighth inning when they helped us a little bit. [Andrew] Robinson threw the ball very well in the ninth inning.

On facing a Georgia team with a worse record than normal
They have had a few guys missing, but they do have all of their pitchers in there, so we knew we were going to have a battle that way. [Levi] Hyams got back in there to play shortstop. They are getting closer to being healthy. You just throw out the records, anytime we play its going to be a good ballgame.

On approach at the plate
I thought we had real good approaches against [Blake] Dieterich. [Justin] Earls threw the ball good on us, kept us off balance and kept the ball down. I felt like most of the night we had pretty good approaches.

On leaving Pope in too long
If I had it to do over again I would have taken him out, I wouldn’t have let him face I think it was [Peter] Verdin when he did, so blame me for that. I thought he competed really well. He was a little unfortunate that some balls that weren’t hit very hard found some holes, and the hit and run play really was a big play that we should have had a double play on.

On team’s ability to come from behind
It’s a good sign. I think we compete pretty hard for nine innings, and that is one of the things we want to make sure we do. I think we are capable coming from behind for sure, but I don’t like it being every game.

Second Baseman Jacob Esch

On approach to the game in the beginning of the season
Just try to stay in the lineup everyday. Last year was kind of a horserace at second if you will, with Connor [Winn], and [Jason] Garofalo, Evan Martin, and Pat Long all playing so I guess just come out hot out of the gate and give Coach Hall no reason to put someone else out there.

On position battles
A lot of guys thought maybe they could sneak sometime in the outfield, and a lot of guys thought maybe some late game defensive replacements. A lot of guys have really stepped up defensively, so the late game replacements aren’t necessary. I think everybody knew second base was up for grabs and everybody was fighting for it.

On plate approach ninth inning at bat
My approach when I got up there was I am taking it until he throws me a strike. Even if it had gotten to a 3 and 1 count I thought about taking until it was 3-2 so we could get some runners moving just to see what might happen.

On dropped pop-up between Esch and Dietrich
We both called it at the exact same time. I let him have it, and at the last second he slipped and lost his footing and the ball fell. Stuff happens, it’s baseball.

Reliever Andrew Robinson

On getting go ahead run in eighth inning
It’s great, we have all the momentum in our favor, so I just wanted to go out and get a few strikes and get out of there as quickly as possible.

On getting first out in ninth
Getting the first batter in any inning is huge, and especially the ninth. I just try to get ahead. He swung at the first pitch, and happened to pop it up to center field.
