10,000m Highlights Day One at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Georgia Tech track and field team completed its first day Thursday at the 121st year of the Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at historic Franklin Field. Katie Townsend, Kelly Meyer and Melissa Fairey highlighted day one, all finishing in the top 10 of the 10,000 meters.

Townsend crossed the line first for Georgia Tech and third overall in a personal-best time of 34:43.47. Kelly Meyer (PR – 34:58.38) and Melissa Fairey (34:59.18) finished in fifth and sixth, respectively. Matthew Munns ran the men’s 10,000 meters in a time of 31:31.84 to wrap up the night’s competition.

Jazmyne Taylor, Domonique Hall, Angelica Henderson and Christina Pensock ran the 4×400-meter relay in 3:48.55 for 15th place of 83 teams. The time and place qualified the quartet for the College Final set for Saturday at 5:35 p.m.

Also in the relays, the women’s DMR team of Rachel Hammond, Shannon Innis, Laura Serres and Diana Pressel ran a season-best time of 11:58.04 to place 14th.

Laura Nelson (PR – 17:13.37) and Allison Brackin (17:17.23) finished in 20th and 21st, respectively in the women’s Olympic development 5,000 meters. On the men’s side, Nahom Solomon took 17th with a time of 14:52.89.

Marinice Bauman placed 20th out of 57 runners in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.23 and teammate Shannon Innis took 23rd (1:02.31).

Donjhae Jones recorded a season-best performance for eighth place in the long jump (championship division) with a mark of 5.83m (19-1.50). Carissa Tipler placed 27th out of 53 in the long jump (college) with a distance of 5.38m (17-8).

Bailey Weiland placed 17th out of 45 competitors in the high jump with a height of 1.68m (5-6).

Action continues for the Yellow Jackets at the Penn Relays on Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s triple jump.
